Analysis of my College Magazine Cover
In keeping with the idea of my cover I have aimed the contents page at east Norfolk students. For my contents page I have chosen an edited version of the east Norfolk sixth form college Logo, I have blurred and distorted it to highlight a concept of rebellion that is often found in students and I want the magazine to put distance between the academic side of college and the fun side of college, so I have done it almost as a way of showing vandalism against the logo.
Again I have used the same font to create a sense of continuity in the magazine because from my research into magazines I have observed this to be one of the typical conventions. I have not chosen a formal language for my contents page for example I have used abbreviated words such as ‘info’ and pics and have not always used capital letters consistently and not always where appropriate to make the page seem more unplanned and because I think it makes the magazine seem more made ‘for the student, by the student’ it breaks the boundary between the media creator and the audience.
I chose these things to have in my magazine because after my questionnaire research and analysis I was able to see what it was that students were interested to read about in the college magazine and what they don’t want. I have chosen the three highest scoring thing to use as my regular segments; upcoming events, Facebook updates and gigs/cinema. Whereas the things that the students were uninterested by were things such as Sudoku and the history of the college. Again by using the Facebook logo I form an instant link with audience as this is something that almost every student at college will relate to and is most likely actually something that they use.
I have chosen to use black and red as my colours because they stand out from the faded pale background and they both connote a sense of rebellion and perhaps even danger which is something that intrigues a young audience.
The images I have chosen although there are not many are things that people link to my contents titles, I have used popcorn to symbolise the cinema and have lifted a picture from the internet of the ocean rooms as this Is the setting for the ‘Must see College Party Pics’.
I am pleased with my contents page and how it links to the front cover, but when I do my music magazine contents page I will take more images to have on my content page so that I can make the images more in keeping with the stories inside. Also I want the background to have less variation in colour and tone so that it doesn’t distract from the words and images on the page.
