Magazine Contents Analysis
Dazed & Confused which is a music and culture magazine adopts a very basic and easy to read contents page unlike some other magazines that appeal to a larger audience where they use the maximum number of images for maximum band coverage this magazine opts for one image which is the background to the contents page. The stylised blurred photography supports the idea of an artistic target audience that would appreciate advanced photography.
They subvert the usual conventions of a music magazine as usually the heading on the contents page are things like features and regulars etc. But this uses ‘the front’ ‘the mains’ and the back as a way of separating the different sections of content in the magazine. By keeping to a few key colours it makes the cover look a lot more stylish and well composed than if it were like ‘Kerrang’ for example which uses multiple fonts colours and photos, because it is less concerned with the image of the magazine. This one, like my intended magazine is demonstrating fashion as well as music so the overall look of the magazine is crucial to attract both the fashion conscious audience as well as the music conscious audience. Having the text not in text boxes makes the magazine seem much more unique however they have not had to compromise the readability of the text because it is all highlighted in white so the background image is still visible but all of the written content remains legible.
The content of the magazine itself is very fitting with the tone of the magazine, the blend of fashion and music is balanced well and the chosen bands are mostly fresh, stylish new acts that the audience are likely appeal to and want to know more about the music itself as well as the fashion. for example the XX is a new band that is predicted to do really well, most of the bands are of a similar genre and are likely to be trendy when it comes to image too.
