Love magazine-Condé Nast Publishing- Katy GrandAlthough this is a fame and fashion magazine rather than a music magazine it does hold a lot of the same ideas as a music magazine might. Especially as musicians are now perhaps more then ever the biggest fashion trend setters in society. Take for example people like Lily Allen and Lady Gaga although this magazine has only been printed since summer 2009 it’s cover has already played host to some of the biggest names in show business; Beth Ditto, Kate moss, Iggy pop, Naomi Campbell and many others. The magazine adopts many different covers for each issue that is published, which I think is really good way to broaden your audience appeal, if you don’t have time to look through or even at the contents page, you can see the many different faces on the different covers. The bi-annual publication covers style and celebrities, with a noticeable emphasis on edgy and fashion-forward photography.
What I love about the layout is the contrast between traditional typography and free hand calligraphy it seems more like someone’s personal scrap book rather than an official magazine I think this engages the ready especially one that is interested in fashion as it has minimal text but ample images. The images are not very edited and where they are it is not made apparent which makes the people seem much more real and easy to relate to, for example the image of Kate Moss above, people would be used to seeing her very air brushed edited but here it is almost as if the audience is being given a look into a window of her life.
Review of first issue.
There are lots of things we love about LOVE (not least their love for walnuts): we love the fact that it doesn't take itself too seriously, we love Agyness as the Queen, we love the photography, the layout, the fact that it's FUN. our only slight criticism is that there are perhaps a few too many celebs and not quite enough editorial fashion (at least to please major fashion obsessives like ourselves), but still it is marketed as a fame and fashion magazine, and they probably wanted the first issue to go off with a bang with lots of famous people, so perhaps in future the fashion/celebrity ratio will be more balanced.
i-D magazineIt is a British magazine dedicated to fashion, music, art and youth culture. i-D was founded by designer and former Vogue art director Terry Jones in 1980. The first issue was published in the form of a hand-stapled fanzine with text produced on a typewriter. Over the years the magazine evolved into a mature glossy but it has kept street style and youth central to every issue.
